2 Weekends in Singapore. Need to Travel.

After we got back from Thailand, we had 2 weekends straight in Singapore. Actually up until today (I'm leaving for Bali tonight). The past few weeks have consisted of lots of parties, movie watching with David, City Harvest church (insane), more Asian Canadians, celebrating CNY, chinatown, exploring new places, canteen A, homework, family, eating chocolate blueberry waffles, etc. It has been so weird not traveling for 2 weekends. Im dying to go. Also, it consisted of going to Pulau Ubin where we biked all day. And meeting some great new friends, who are now part of our group. Sam and Yun and Julie. I love those girls! We met at Supperclub and have pretty much been inseperable since then. We went to Attica twice together and now theyre going to be with us in Bali...and me, Sam, and Yun are trying to plan a girls trip somewhere for easter.

For CNY we went to chinatown. Which we thought was going to be a bigger deal than it really was. There were about 3 fireworks and then it was over. And it was so packed. I went to lunch with Aunty Kally and Alyssa and Catherine, and her daughter. It was so fun! A true traditional Chinese meal. We even tossed the plate of food thing. I have no idea what it is called. I also went to Uncle Arthur's family's for dinner. I was starving (because all the restaurants in Singapore shut down). So I ate so much white rice that my stomach hurt after. David and I went to Vivocity too, and ate really good food at the food republic there. I even ate some pork dumpling. Which was so juicy and good. Also the boys and Sam and Yun smoke hookah at Clarke Quay while Amanda and Julie and I fell asleep. We finally took the MRT home about 2am. Daniel and David and Yun and Sam stayed up all night to see the sun rise and take the morning MRT home. The next day, CNY and Valentine's Day, ( A double whammy!) I made reservations at Muthu's Curry, a realllllly delicious and nice Indian restaurant on Dempsey Rd. It was so hard to find but it ended up being a great meal. David learned not to order Masala Coke. We had samosas and kebaba and chicken curry but David ate the chicken. It was soo good.
We got roses, but it honestly didn't really feel like Valentine's Day. I had no class the following week except for stupid Neuro Science on Thursday for 3 hours. So it was definitely lots of time to go around Singapore. We did Body Worlds (which was so cool! I couldn't believe how small the brain was!) and Farrer Park (do you think it's a park??), Mustafa (little india, continued), and Pulau Ubin (I tried fish......)
Pulau Ubin was so much fun. I loved the biking around and exploring. We met Fok and Elliott and Saro (first NUS boys to have met) and they are so cool. It was such a good time, but involved lots of sweating. I can't believe Fok and Saro got into the nasty beach water. LOL But david got to fly his kite, and have our sand heart competition. He won. And the ocean water there was in prison, which didn't add to its beauty.
David and I went to church on my birthday. The pastor was this crazy chinese guy, who spoke about how God was rich and I quote "middle class wannabes" and how "God's purpose was for us to be rich." My mouth was literally open the whole time. And all the chinese people were dancing up and down during worship. And we met Rebekah and Indian Girl there, who called us later and asked us to join them yesterday night for some mysterious party. We ended up bailing last minute. Probably one of the best decisions we have ever made. Instead we saw "Dear John" which was a mix of sadness and corniness all in one. But Valentine's Day was a cute movie. Minus Taylor Swift. Who should stick to singing.
Anyways.....I am going to BALI soon. I cannot wait. I have also booked tickets to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Philippines. I could really get used to this lifestyle. Life at home just seems so mundane compared.
But I do miss my friends and family. Haven't felt homesick at all though. I love the asian food here too. And the bao's. Also, David and I went to Holland Village to eat at Crystal Jade Xiao Long Bao. Homemade noodles. SO DELICIOUS!! Best noodles Ive ever eaten my life, hands down. Can't wait to take mom there. But for now, Bali is what's on my mind...

Phuket & Phi Phi Reflections...And Then Some...

I feel it necessary to also record my memories of my trip to Thailand: Phuket & Phi Phi Islands (aka one gorgeous place). It was DDTRR that went, and the theme of the trip was Boss. Everything was done like a boss, right boys? Massages...Food...Private boats...beaches....Maybe the only thing not boss was our Golden Hill Bungalow accommodations, but I would say it made the trip even more memorable. Being the only girl on the trip was interesting...I learned a lot about the male species though. For example, they take JUST as long as girls to get ready, if not longer. I was CONSTANTLY waiting and waiting for them to get ready. Two, they are ALWAYS hungry. Skipping a meal just doesn't cross their mind. Three, if they are a good group of guys, they are amazing travel buddies! Even though they drove me crazy at times. But honestly, I love how easy going and laid back guys are traveling compared to girls. No fuss.
There was SOME added estrogen to this testosterone madness thank god with the addition of Amanda and Diana for some parts of the trip. Thus, we became DDTRRAD for some parts of it. I hope you caught the RAD part.
Anyways, we all took our flight over to Phuket on Thursday night. We got there and took a big van thing to the hostel. But on the way, the driver conveniently "needed directions" and stopped at the travel agency where we conveniently (for them) booked our ferry tickets to Phi Phi Islands for the next morning. Phuket was so old and not developed very much, at least what we saw of it. Of course, in the van it was DDTRRAD and we listened to our music on Diana's speakers, which was really funny.
We arrived at the Phuket Backpacker hostel. It was my first time in a hostel, and I was pretty terrified. It wasn't that bad though! I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of bunks..and nice people..and a big TV room..and cheap ice cream (David haha). All the shoes were piled on the floor right when you walk in. Which really made it feel like home. We claimed our bunks upstairs. Tommy was on the bottom by himself. I was on the top bunk above Roel. Daniel was on another top bunk above David. We shared a room with some other strangers. Including the random Mongolian guy, who we somehow managed to see again at Phi Phi.. small world.
Me and the boys went to get dinner at this cafe down the road. The location of the hostel wasn't too great. It was just so old and dead around there. We all got PAD THAI (when in Thailand right?) except for Roel, who had to be different and get a steak. David got his iced tea, and was surprised when there was ice in it, and didn't drink it, for fear of catching some ice-borne disease. The pad thai was pretty good, until Tommy drenched it in the red sauce, making it so salty. Thanks T.
We walked around for a bit after, and I walked by an old man telling me that he was a taxi driver and could taxi me anywhere. Too bad his car had NO sign of being a taxi. I definitely stayed close to the boys.
We went back to go to bed. David and I standing in the co-ed bathroom brushing and flossing our teeth. Then taking showers, and throwing the body soap over the dividing walls to each other. It was a task for him to even turn on the shower. lol
After showering, the 5 of us all played cards before going to bed. I went on a 2 game winning streak, which may have been the most I've won of that game we play. I have no idea what it is called. But it's pretty fun.
I was pretty much RIGHT next to the air con that night on the top bunk. I woke up FREEZING and asked Daniel to have his blanket and he gave it to me. Next to saving my life after cliff jumping, this is one of the nicest things that Aussie has done for me.
FRIDAY (LONGEST DAY OF MY LIFE)
The next morning we got up about 6 or 7. Showered and got ready to go to PHI PHI!! I tried to get some local Chinese Thai breakfast off some little stand thing, but I failed in making a good decision and ate one bite of this egg meat thing and spit it out. I went back and ate a few bites of plain noodles in broth. Communicating with them was so difficult, as they knew about 0 English. But whatever. That's why I love traveling. I saw a monk walking on the street, and an adorable little Thai boy playing in the back of a truck.
Our bus to the ferry dock came and we went over there. We met A and D there, and discovered that they gave croissants and coffee for breakfast. The 2 hr ferry ride was awesome! It was so fun exploring the boat and getting soaked on the sides and the WINDYNESS and going to the front of the boat and just relaxing and looking out and seeing nothing but endless water and beautiful horizons and island formations that you only dream of seeing. I would go off on my own and sit on the side of the boat and just take in my surroundings, truly enjoying the moment and being so far off somewhere, so far from my world and reality back home. There is something so refreshing about it all. Thinking of how everything around me at home is the same...but when I return, it will be me that has changed..
David and I talked for a while on the boat, talking about how lucky we are to be in our position. Most people our age don't have this opportunity, that's for sure. When we arrived at Phi Phi, I was overwhelmed by its beauty, and its touristyness! It was a bombardment of tourist stuff, yet definitely asian. Tons and tons of endless stalls and little shops selling the cutest and most dresses and clothes and shoes and everything you could imagine. Me and David's favorite was the sunglass converted pancake stand.
We made our loooong trek to our bungalow. It would have been nice if the dam right in front of it had water in it. But apparently there is a water shortage on that island. For example, the water wasn't running in the bungalow, but I kept the faucet turned on accidentally. So the next morning when there was water supply, it ran and ran and ran while we slept. We awoke to some guy banging on our door telling us that the water was running, but we were so tired we didn't know what he was talking about. We came to find our entire bathroom flooded with water, and barely any water left to shower. So yes, I drained the rationed water supply at the Bungalows. It would be me, of all people too.
Anyways, the huge steep trek up the stairs to our bungalows was fun too. A definite workout for the legs. There were 3 beds (big, medium, small) in the room I shared with Daniel and Roel. David and Tommy shared a double. As long as we didn't haev to stay in those "dorms" we were happy. Amanda and Diana stayed in a different hotel place down on the main road strip. The culture at Phi Phi where we stayed was all young people who were foreigners from all over. I managed to send a postcard to the family, and they just received it yesterday...
We got there in early afternoon and we had no time to waste. So we ended up booking this $400 baht/person for a private boat to take us around the islands. We tried to make it cheaper and not include lunch OR the life vests, but we ended up paying the extra hundred baht to have the life jackets. Apparently that's all our lives are worth.
David and I got some noodle and rice for lunch. The others got their sandwiches that they loved so much throughout the whole trip. We followed our Thai driver who wasn't a happy camper and got on our boat. It was so cool. It was the 7 of us, and so relaxing to say the least.
First stop was Monkey Island. Where I swam in the ocean and tried to make it over to take the picture in the water, but all you saw was my little black head. Tommy got owned by a mean monkey. Daniel broke his camera. Because of a mean monkey.
Second stop was this beautiful cove. Surrounded by tall rock formations. We swam around in the sea...the boys used the life jackets as diapers to hold them up so they wouldn't have to paddle. We saw the viking caves on the way too!
Third stop was to snorkel! Snorkeling has now become my new favorite hobby. It was beautiful seeing the fish, so colorful! I felt like I was in Finding Nemo. And feeling the little stings by the jelly fish..All that David and I wanted to do was touch some fish....
Fourth stop (and most memorable stop): MAYA BEACH. (Most beautiful award)
This part needs its own section.
2 words. CLIFF JUMPING.
So Gael and John tell us about cliff jumping. Immediately I am down to do it. The boys were scared, but I wanted to go no matter what. David's first reaction "I'm scared of heights" but he ended up doing it.
So all 7 of us make our way over to cliff jump. Although we hear that another exchange girl had just done it and chipped her tooth and got huge bruise marks, we still decided to do it. We walked through some jungly area, across some of the sharpest rocks ever, through this little cave waterfall thing, then swam out to the cliff we thought we were supposed to go to. There on the cliff was some Thai guy's little hut. I asked him if we could jump. They spoke in Thai about it, then agreed we could go. We climbed up the rope ladder and up the steep steps of rocks to his hut. I couldn't believe he lives there. When I looked out over the ledge, I thought I was going to pass out. It was soooo high up. Approximately 15 meters. I was shaking. I said I would jump first. Daniel and I were debating, but eventually it was him who jumped first. Thank god, because if I had gone first and no one was there to help me swim I probably would have drowned! I was so scared to jump. The only reason I finally did it was because the people on the boat passing by were shouting and giving me a thumbs up to do it. So I went. And I couldn't scream or anything. I fell into the water really loose, not rigid enough, and I felt like I smashed into concrete. I was cussing up a storm, couldn't move, felt paralyzed. My tailbone and back were in pain. Daniel came and saved me and brought me over to the rocks. I thought I was going to die.
Then came David out of nowhere. He didn't even look down before he jumped. Then came Amanda, who quite possibly had the worst fall. She fell in the water, HARD and came up and immediately started crying. I could see the pain all over her face. The 3 of us were trying to calm her down. But Daniel had to go back and save the others.
Next came Roel, who had the best fall. The first thing he said when he came up was "F*** YEAH!!!" Next came Diana, who the first thing she said when she came up was "Ouch". But her and I had really bad back pain from it all. Amanda had external bruises, and we had internal bruises, is what we concluded. Finally, lastly, came Tommy. He would be last. I think it's probably worse coming last because you have seen everyone fall and the anticipation just builds. But that's just my theory. But he experienced some pain too. Thank god for tiger balm though. Thank god.
On the way back, it was difficult to move in the water. It was a beautiful sight though, with the rocks and water and all...

Next we stayed out in the middle of the Andaman Sea to watch the sunset. Oh my god. Words can't describe how amazing it was to be sitting there in a boat watching it set over the horizon of the ocean with some amazing friends. The boys smoked their cigars, thinking they were so boss. Despite the intense pain that we felt (Diana and I were glued back down to the wooden benches on the boat) it was a great sight.
We got back and the boys had massages, the girls got showered and met back with the boys to eat some AMAZING PAD THAI which was sooo good. Then we went to this little bar thing and I tried beer + sprite. It was disgusting. Supposed to taste like champagne. Which is also gross. I ended up drinking sprite.
Then we went to see some Thai boxing. Then went to the huge beach party. It was like, from a movie or something. A million people, young and tourists, and fire jump ropes and fire rings to walk through. We met up with some NTU people like Diego and them there..Diego didn't jump.. lol
We hung out at the beach party for a bit then David and I walked Tommy home.
The next day Roel and Daniel and I went to get breakfast. I actually had yogurt with fruit. And now I eat fruit every morning for breakfast because we got a fridge. Anyways, we booked another day tour for the private boat. This time, we went to Monkey Beach again (armed with a huge thing of little bananas to feed them) but David ended up eating most of them. Then we went to Bamboo Island which was soooo cool. I talked with some of the native Thai people there. They were soo poor. So many of them just sitting on the porch of their little tiny one room shack. The island is a high danger zone for tsunamis. The water on the beach was SO clear. It was incredibly GORGEOUS. But so poor, and backwards. David and I found a secluded private beach on the side of the island. So far removed from society, people, technology, everything. When I was there, I thought "this is what life is all about..."
We left that island the boys had their coke and vodka on the ride back. Im sure they were thinking "this is what life is all about.." We went to Shark Point after to snorkel some more. We saw some sharks!! It was so cool. I was scared so I swam away the second I saw them. But they were little ones. But still.
Then we got back and got ready then ate dinner at this chinese restaurant which was pretty nice but the waiter was so incompetent. I of course had my pineapple fried rice. I did mention pineapple is a staple in my diet right? No joke. We walked around for awhile around the island there and then I ended up going back to get ready for bed and watch Scary Movie while the boys went to get massages. I couldn't even fathom someone touching my back. So. Much. Pain.

The next morning we got up and had to catch the ferry back. It was another relaxing ride back. David and I journaled a bit. When we got back to Phuket we stayed at the Loveli Guesthouse. Which made us feel like royalty. We booked an elephant riding tour and then I got a foot massage. I ate some pineapple and a chocolate crepe off this street stand. Then we took this oooold jeep thing to this faraway place to ride elephants. It was called Island Safari. David and I rode our elephant, Betsy, while Tommy got his own elephant and Roel and Daniel got one. David lost one of his flip flops while on the elephant. And their bath was interesting too. Then we had to go to the elephant show where we got "Thai back massages" and elephant kisses from the elephants!! I was so scared of going near the elephant. The boys were saying that I could jump off a cliff but can't go near an elephant. That's just...me.
Side note: Daniel's grand idea to buy 6 HUGE bottles of water...lol
After that we went to Patong Beach which was honestly a disappointment. So touristy! And they wanted to charge to use the beach chairs and stuff. So we just swam and relaxed in the ocean. Best moment: When David got splashed by a jet skiier in the water.
We went back to shower then headed out to get dinner at CHAMPS!!!! We ate like bosses there for sure. It was local delicious thai food, words can't express. Of course my glass noodle dish came like last. But we all ordered to much food and it was so cheap. Except for the fish David ordered til he found out it was really expensive. Moral of story: The gay overly friendly English white man at the Loveli Guesthouse knows where to eat all the good food at Patong Beach.
We then walked around (the mall there was nice and big) and got some ice cream and then the boys got massages. David and I shared a room to get Thai back massages which were not good at all. My back was still hurting from the cliff jumping, and it wouldn't crack, which made me crack up because the poor girl was trying so hard to make it crack. David's lady was the same lady who did my foot massage earlier that day. And I'm pretty sure she wasn't always a lady...but that's Thailand for ya.
Then David and I ended up having the longest talk of our lives. On the stairs of the Loveli Guesthouse. Well we walked around outside for awhile but then ended up there! Summary of that talk: Live and Learn...No regrets...etc.
Got a few hours sleep that night, then got up early to go to the airport. We flew home and I went straight to my class from 1:30 to 3:30. Human Motivation lecture. Oh so exciting.
All in all, an amazingly fun trip.
Boss is more like it.

Making 21 in Singapore a Big deal

I spent my 21st birthday in Singapore. Who would've known that I would here of all places for the big celebration? Better than Vegas or SD...being in Singapore to celebrate this HUGE occasion was so special (I mean, I can DRINK at home now, praise the lord) It was so memorable. So memorable that I am dedicating one entire blog post to it.

My birthday here consisted of 3 parts:

Part 1: Friday Night - GIRLS NIGHT OUT @ Wala Wala in Holland Village. Me and 11 of my best girlfriends here went out to a laid back, live-band bar to have a night 100% free of: testosterone, australian accents, dutch accents, and boys with their "dibs" on certain girls (haha). It was so refreshing, I must say, since we are ALWAYS with the boys. I had a really tasty virgin strawberry margarita. The live band, whose lead singer was an Indian guy who sang beautifully with NO accent (then spoke in Singlish which kind of killed it for all of us) was pretty good! We were their groupies for about 10 minutes while we tried to get them to play some T Swift (Sam hahahaa) and some JT. But they drew the line at Jay Sean. But we were all right with that. (Baby are you down, down, down, down, down?)
BUT we did manage to get them to dedicate "Use Somebody" to "Renee from San Diegoooo" which was pretty cool.

All the girls except Sam and Julie left when it got late, but the 3 of us stayed later, and ended up having the most intense girl talk ever. What would I do without these girls to vent to? Later, we cabbed home. And sam, who wanted to go back to a common room and hang out more, pretty much died when we got in the taxi. But we ran into a drunk Brad and Sarah and Ragna on the way out... lol

Most hilarious moment: Fernanda and Susana meeting us at the MRT wearing HUGE backpacks.
Most memorable moment: Intense girl talk with Sam and Julie :)

Part 2: Saturday Night - Attica & CityAlive.
Surprisingly, Daniel and Roel and David weren't with me at the stroke of midnight for my birthday. And Tommy was in China, of course. What kind of friends are they anyway?? :) Instead, I was with Sam, Yun, Julie, Hilori, John, Amanda, Stephen, Mike Buchs, Norell... We got to Attica and barely got in (the password, said with confidence, is SG UNIGHTED!!!) and got my free bottle of champagne which I had one taste of and almost spit out. So gross. So my friends happily finished the bottle for me, after having a toast to my birthday! We started the dance floor downstairs to "Let's Get It Started" and the great music just kept on playing and playing.. At the stroke of midnight (Hilori was the watch keeper) they all danced around me and "Let It Rock" came on.

Around 2 or so we decided to go check out CityAlive, even though we vowed we wouldn't go to meet the boys, but have them come to us. Wr cabbed over to the street party (with Stephen singing aint no mountain high enough to the driver) and bargained with some RANDOM singaporean guy to buy tickets for $18.50 instead of $19. lol
We got in and to put it nicely...it was kind of a disappointment. Where was all the good music? And all the people? But we met up with the boys anyways and some other exchange students to have some fun dancing in the streets.
David and I went to see the river which was pretty nice. Then came back and I think I was about to die from exhaustion. Roel picked me up to take a picture..and we were filmed on some TV station which was pretty hilarious. Finally, Julie and I had to call it quits, and we cabbed back. It wasn't until the next day that David told me they played Hotel Motel, best song ever.

Line(s) of the night:
"It's her birthday!!!" -Andrew & Alcohol
"Such a buzz kill" - Mike Buchs, in reference to my gargantuan outdated camera I was holding while dancing.
Moment of the Night: Seeing Julie bob up and down while we jumped up and down in a huddle to "Let's Get It Started"

Part 3 - Sunday Night - VANSH INDIAN RESTAURANT @ Singapore Indoor Stadium
Probably the most special part, about 25 of my friends came to my birthday party dinner at Vansh. Did I mention that Indian food is my favorite food now? The food that night rested my case. David and I shared a mushroom curry then topped up with some never ending bowl of rice and naan and gravy and delicious sauces. It was delicious. And an important note is that there was not ONE alcoholic beverage ordered or consumed the whole night there. The DRIEST 21st birthday ever. Right Christina? ..But can I just flash back in time to my pre-singapore life, sitting in my room at home, talking to mom about celebrating my 21st in Singapore on exchange and wondering whether I would even have friends to celebrate with me. And here I find myself surrounded by such amazing people!!

All of the fun Chicago boys came..and of course DDR...and all of my girls! Plus a few more americans and swedes and germans and such. But I can't forget mis mexicanas!! Who really are amazing girls. I absolutely love them to death. Christina and them had gotten me some birthday decorations and some blow things and a tiara (!!!!!!) and a lei! And mentos. Which you can only get away with here in Singapore. Because it is my only vice here, besides Hershey Kisses. It is the closest thing to gum you can get here. So they definitely know me too well. But it was so sweet. And I felt like some Hawaiian queen. And Diana got me an "R" necklace, bless her heart. And I was so excited to wear my dress. I'm pretty sure if I was a piece of clothing, this dress would be me.

Anyways, we had our dinner, I mingled and talked to each group of people and near the end of the night I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a cake..but I was ready to go home since it seemed everyone was ready too. My friends all kept stalling..telling me to take more pictures, etc. I was oblivious. Then as I was sitting there, they all start singing Happy Birthday and I turn around. And there. Is the most beautiful heart shaped cake for me! Only David knew I wanted a heart shaped cake, and he ordered it for me! I seriously almost cried, I was so happy. It was vanilla, and soooo good. They caked me too, into a slice of cake, as follows with the Mexican tradition, of course (Mordida??)

All in all, I guess I can say that I got to have my cake, and eat it too.

Best moment(s) of the night: Surrounded by friends. Seeing my heart shaped cake. And making a birthday wish.

...I'm 21. And one lucky girl. <3

Bintan & Penang Reflections..

I regret how much time I have let pass since I have last updated. It has been so insane, these past few weeks, with so many memories and good times overwhelming me. Where to begin?!?!?!

BINTAN, INDONESIA. This weekend trip could also be renamed as "one big party of exchange students." It consisted of Americans teaching Europeans that beer pong and flip cup make up the majority of our college memories, eating delicious club sandwiches, exploring "Little Rock" island, swimming at the resort nearby, kayaking and losing my flip flops in the ocean, feeling the wind on the motor bike with David (and dying of laughter), listening to Mary Rose's adventurous lifestyle of "trying everything once", doing model shoots with Susana, getting crabs from the asian fisherman in the sea, appreciating the beauty found in the simplest of things, and dancing the night away to DJ daniel's ipod playlist. It truly was a weekend to remember, not really because of Bintan itself, but because of the people there. It established many friendships, and seeing the poverty and poor conditions of the island made me so grateful for NTU. Walking into our room, Christina, Susana and I couldn't believe its conditions (especially that bathroom!) But I soon came to realize that beggars can't be choosers, and really just enjoy the experience of it all. I will never forget the "exploring" that was done during those crazy 2 night parties, and the bonding that was done while playing games, eating, swimming, kayaking, and such. Sleeping 3 in the bed was absolutely hysterical, and I will never forget our "dark eye-makeup" sessions and getting ready in about 3.5 seconds in order to escape the room ASAP. I absolutely love Susana, perhaps the sweetest, most genuine girl who truly has a love for life. I am so lucky to have met such wonderful people.
All in all, I wouldn't want to return to Bintan. But it was truly a weekend of fun, and Lord knows I wouldn't trade that experience for the world.

The following week was full of late night partying and dancing. I don't think I got more than 5 hours of sleep any of the nights. I don't think I have ever danced so much before in my life. It is funny that when you put the nerdy girl in the party school, she studies and never goes out. When you put the nerdy girl in the nerdy school, she never studies and just goes out! I guess it is all part of being on exchange. That and the peer pressure from Daniel. Freaking Daniel.

The following week also consisted of going to the Chinese Heritage Center on campus with David, and then celebrating Australia Night in Little India (strange, I know).

David and I planned to take on Singapore that following Wednesday since neither of us had class. What we did:
-Chinatown
-Clarke Quay @ day - gotta love that turkish ice cream!!!! so delicious
-Orchard Road (gotta love them 3 for $10 stores)
-City Hall - ?
-Marina Bay - picture with the merlions? Fail.
-River Boat cruise back to Clarke Quay
-Japanese dinner with no seafood @ Clarke Quay - that Japanese waitress still makes me mad
-City Hall to meet with the guys and turn down their invite to supper club
-Back home to climb to the top of the ADM building. Where we saw the Mexicans.

All in all, a tiring, yet totally memorable day full of adventure! It's beginning to become a trend...

PENANG, MALAYSIA. The following weekend we left for Penang on Friday morning about 4:30 am. It was definitely a last minute kind of trip (also beginning to become a trend) but so much fun nonetheless! We literally tried to plan out what we wanted to do in Penang at 11 pm the night before we left. I decided to just call Poa Poa and she said not to worry. Taking the early morning taxi ride to the airport was pretty dull, I just remember that that was the last I ever saw of CJ, my previous Chinese local roommate. I really liked CJ. Such a nice girl. Anyways, we got to the airport to discover that Tommy had brought his swiss army knife. lol WTF Tommy? So he had to check in a bag and pay SG$60. Which we never forgot, because he reminded us about it every 5 minutes. If there are three things that Tommy never stops talking about, it is his $60 payment, his $10 bargain for 2 flip flops, and Jenny.

Anyways, there we were: 3 boys (David, Tommy, Chris) and 3 girls (Me, Jenny, Melody). There I was with all Asian Canadians. That also has become a very popular trend (hanging out with Asian Canadians). It was so strange arriving in Penang without Mom. Everything there felt exactly the same. The airport, the bathrooms, the smells, all the same. Except I was with friends! David somehow managed to find the blueberry waffle, while I got us our cab to Ah Zhou's house. Upon arrival at her house, it honestly felt surreal. To be back at the house that I remember so well growing up! It was all the same. Ah Zhou looked good, healthy, but definitely a bit older. We hugged, and she "met" my friends, and I introduced Poa Poa to my friends. They couldn't believe how young she was! Thank god I have these genes...

Poa Poa took us on the bus (first bus ride ever in Penang) to eat some delicious local food. We just happened to arrive for Thaipusam weekend, where there were so many Indians in the streets and everywhere getting ready to celebrate. They were burning coconuts and dancing and playing music..
After a looooong bus ride (they shut down streets for Thaipusam) we finally got back and eventually made it to our hotel: Heritage 1926. It definitely looked like it was built in 1926. It really wasn't very nice, but it wasn't bad either. The bathroom was pretty gross, and I slept on the extra mattress bed. We were SO tired. Exhausted. We ended up walking to a nearby outdoor food court and got some DELICIOUS food. I got some great noodles there. The streets of Penang were so old and dirty. And of course the drivers are just nuts. David and I went to get some chocolate dessert cake at a nearby little place. It was so good. Then we ended up going out to the Oriental, a creepy bar place, where everyone played pool on a huge pool table (I made some great shots) but the smoky rooms were really making me cough! When we got back David and I played some intense games of Speed and Crazy 8's. I won, of course.

The next day Aunty Jenny picked us up. Note: Aunty Jenny was the main reason this trip was such a success. She took us to the Sleeping Buddha Temple, the old mansion, Fort Cornwallis (no comment), delicious local food place (got a mango shake thing and the peanut butter butter bread!!!) and then to get massages (hilarious!) and then to Gurney Plaza to do some shopping. I ended up getting the help of some local girls to help me pick out a dress for the club that night. After we were dropped off on the streets for Thaipusam. I took some pictures with the Indians all dressed up beautifully for the event! The girls looked so cute, especially the little girls. We ate more great food at a local place (I got some spicy vegetarian noodles) and then the event started. I have never seen so many Indians in my life. "Where are they going? Where are they all coming from?" lol. It was incredible. Temples set up on the side of the roads. HUUUGE pots of food. Loud music. People walking with needles in the face, back and bodies. They looked tranced, dazed. It was so crowded and festive. I will never forget it as long as I live! The culture was overwhelming.

Afterwards we got back (after temporarily losing Chris - not good) and got ready to go out. Jenny straightened my hair and I wore my little black dress and we all went out to S club. I couldn't believe I had been there before for Jaime's Hens Night! The music was NOT good, but I got a good non-alcoholic beverage while Melody got an iced tea (which was more expensive) lol. We eventually ended up having a good time, dancing away as always. We didn't get home til about 3 or 4 am (Aunty Jenny picked us up). Did I mention Aunty Jenny is amazing?

The next day we went to the Spice Garden (fail), "butterfly farm" wink wink, Tropical Fruit Garden (fruit buffet!!! fruit drink!!! absolutely delicious), then to the beach to go jetskiing, parasailing, and horsebackriding. David and I were bullies on the ocean while we jetskiied, hitting Melody and Chris and splashing Tommy and Jenny. So funny. I ended up driving it for a little bit. But we went to the beach by Golden Sands resort which I remembered we stayed at before!! So many memories...
We took showers real quick then met back at the beach to have a nice dinner with Auntie Lai Sum, Xia Hue, Uncle Ben, Ah Zhou, Poa Poa, her maid (lol), and my friends and I. The chinese food was delectable, honestly. I couldn't believe how much I really enjoyed the food. Especially those vegetables!!

We went to the night market in Penang, and that is where I bought my Free Spirit bracelet. It was so nice hanging out with Uncle Ben too. And Aunty Jenny really felt like my Aunty. She even took us right after dinner to eat Poh Piah and orange juice, but we were still so full! But David of course ate mine.
That night we hung out by the pool, while Chris went to bed early (fake yawn LOL) Later we all played the funnest game of cards. The slapping game, where I kept slapping the table and didn't know that an Ace equals 2 lol. We played with Ringgit and I ended up losing a few Ringgit, but it as definitely worth it!

We got up so early the next morning. I had to wake up the girls 20 minutes before we were supposed to leave. I left my bathing suit in the bathroom so Aunty Jenny's brother had to take us all the way back to the hotel to get it. And we didn't really get to enjoy the breakfast, but we definitely made it on time for our flight! Which was in about 2 hours. Tommy and I couldn't find everyone for the longest time. And the Penang airport actually added on and made some renovations! When we got in to the airport there I see Poa Poa....sitting with Chris!! So surprised!! Both their flights were so delayed. Chris ended up getting back home after us, when his flight was supposed to leave way earlier! Also, David and I tried Dain's for the first time, which was definitely a candy to remember..
All in all, Penang was a huge success. Aunty Jenny. Poa Poa. Definitely lifesavers. It was so nice to go back to a place that was slightly familiar, but with different people and a whole new mindset. One crazy weekend...
